Feeding Management of Broodmares
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction an optimal broodmare feeding program will consider the maintenance of the mare, the growth and development of the fetal foal, and the production of milk. The impact of a broodmare feeding program can be substantial on not only the health of the mare, but also the development of the foal and the future equine athlete. The nutritional requirements of the broodmare vary depending on her physiological state, thus when considering their nutritional and feeding needs, mares are usually divided into several categories. Traditionally, industry professionals divided a mare’s gestation into two distinct nutritional periods: (1) from the time a mare was pronounced in foal to about eight months (first and second trimesters), and (2) nine months to approximately eleven months or birth (late gestation). in common practice, dietary requirements for mares in the first and second trimesters were assumed to be similar to any mature horse at maintenance. Moreover, because fetal growth is most rapid during the last trimester, an increase in certain nutrients such as energy and protein was traditionally recommended during the last three months of pregnancy (NrC, 1989). However, recent review of the research has indicated that certain vital nutrients should be increased prior to late gestation (NrC, 2007). There are now five main categories of broodmare, with specific nutrient requirements divided up even further within each class. The main categories of broodmares are maiden mare; barren and early pregnant, nonlactating mare (0-4 months of gestation); mare in mid-pregnancy (5-8 months of gestation); mare in late pregnancy (9-11 months of gestation); and lactating mare (early and late, and likely pregnant as well). for each class of mare, the required nutrients are the same, but intakes of these nutrients differ depending on the mare’s physiological state.

Effects of Moderate Amounts of Barley in Late Pregnancy on Growth, Glucose Metabolism and Osteoarticular Status of Pre-Weaning Horses
In stud management, broodmares are commonly fed concentrates in late pregnancy. This practice, however, was shown to correlate with an increased incidence of osteochondrosis in foals, which may be related to insulin sensitivity. We hypothesized that supplementation of the mare with barley in the last trimester of pregnancy alters the pre-weaning foal growth, glucose metabolism and osteoarticula...

OBJECTIVE To identify factors associated with excessive proportions of early fetal losses associated with mare reproductive loss syndrome in central Kentucky during 2001. DESIGN Case-control study. PROCEDURE Questionnaires were used to collect information on farm-, pasture-, and individual animal-level factors purportedly associated with mare reproductive loss syndrome. Data were collected ...
متن کاملA comparative antibody study of the potential susceptibility of Thoroughbred and non‐Thoroughbred horse populations in Ireland to equine influenza virus
BACKGROUND In Ireland, horses may be protected against equine influenza virus (EIV) as a result of natural exposure or vaccination. Current mandatory vaccination programmes are targeted at highly mobile horses. A correlation between antibody levels as measured by single radial haemolysis (SRH) and protective immunity against EIV has been established. OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was...
متن کاملThe development and evaluation of a mathematical nutrition model to predict digestible energy intake of broodmares based on body condition changes.
Mathematical nutrition models have been developed for beef and dairy cattle to estimate dietary energy intake needed to change BCS. Similar technology has not been used to improve nutrition and feeding strategies for horses. An accurate equine nutrition model may enhance feeding management and reduce the costs of unnecessary overfeeding and promote an optimal level of fatness to achieve reprodu...
متن کاملEfficacy of parent management training in reduction of children’s feeding problems
Feeding problems are common in infant and young children. These problems affect mother and child relationship. The current study sought to investigate the efficacy of parent management training in reducing children’s feeding problems. The present study was a semi-experimental research based on pretest, posttest and follow-up design with a control group. 34 mothers whose children had feedi...
